Government wants all new cars and vans to be electric by 2040
The Government’s new air quality plan will stipulate that all new cars and vans should be electric by 2040. 
It will also provide a £255 million package to help councils tackle emissions from diesel vehicles, as part of a £3 billion package of spending on air quality.
The new air quality plan is expected to be released later today (Wednesday, July 26), but it is thought that it will consult on a diesel scrappage scheme later this year, with no firm commitment.
The courts had ordered the Department for Food, Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) to produce a new air quality plan after judges agreed with environmental campaigners that previous plans were insufficient to meet EU pollution limits.
